About Kirkland, WA

A city in the U.S. state of Washington called Kirkland is in King County. East of Seattle is a suburb with 92,175 residents, making it the twelfth-largest city in the state and the sixth-largest city in the county, according to the 2020 U.S. census.

The city's waterfront district is home to eateries, art galleries, a performing arts venue, public parks, beaches, and a variety of public artwork, mostly bronze sculptures.

The Seattle Seahawks were founded in Kirkland; for its first ten seasons (1976–85), their NFL team's headquarters and training facility were situated at the Lake Washington Shipyard (now Carillon Point) along Lake Washington. From 1996–2007, they were then housed at adjacent Northwest University. Kirkland once housed the corporate offices of the warehouse retailer Costco. Issaquah serves as the current location of Costco, while the "Kirkland Signature" shop brand bears the city's name.

Kirkland is thought to have a total area of 17.83 square miles, of which 17.818 square miles are land and 0.012 square miles is water. According to the United States Census Bureau, with 92,247 residents, the city was the sixth-largest in King County and the twelfth-largest in all of Washington.

In Kirkland, the average age was 37.4 years. Men and women made up about an equal number of residents.

Entrepreneur Peter Kirk sold his estate and manor at auction in England in 1886 and left for America for financial success. He traveled to the Pacific Northwest and purchased property close to Seattle, which he believed would be the ideal location for a steel town to support a mill.

The Moss Bay Iron and Steel Works, which Kirk and his business partners established in late 1892 to become the "Pittsburgh of the West," was shut down in the spring of 1893 during the Panic of 1893, a nationwide economic crisis. Kirk eventually retired and relocated to the San Juan Islands in the north. The small city persisted, nonetheless. Kirkland recovered by concentrating on its shipbuilding and wool milling sectors rather than on the steel industry. The first wool mill in Washington was founded in Kirkland in 1892, producing wool goods for the American soldiers during World War I and for Alaskan Gold Rush prospectors.

In 1888, Kirkland was founded as the first city on the Eastside. In the early 1900s, Kirkland served as the Eastside's transportation hub, with ferries operating 18 hours a day to ferry commuters and cargo between Marina Park and downtown Seattle.
